Hades Moon – by Melody Scott Zindell

When I read Judy Hall’s book Hades Moon I felt empowered and validated. I continue to lend my copy out to grateful Pluto / Moon friends who then keep it, and I am back to being without a copy. She defines this Moon as being in aspect to Pluto and gives generous orbs. I include a Scorpio Moon and Moon in the 8th house. Even with an 8 degree out of sign conjunction of my Moon to Pluto, this aspect has been huge in my life. This series of blogs is dedicated to all men and women with the courage to allow their feminine aspect to visit, embrace and transmute the dark shadows of The Underworld into Truth and Love.

For years I have been steeped in the metaphysical and spiritual study of the importance of the feminine connecting with the dark shadow, particularly during this transition time. And so I was struck by the significance of Eris and Ceres joining Pluto as dwarf planets. Eris is new for me, but I have identified with and used Ceres in my readings for over a decade. All three dwarf planets are intense. Eris is the Greek Goddess of strife, war, discord and suggesting creation through chaos. Pluto is the release or letting go of anything preventing the process of death and rebirth. Ceres experiences a quintessential Hades Moon experience when she must release her child into the hands of her nemesis Pluto for 6 months of the year into the underworld. There is no option for revenge, and her rage turns to deep grief when the lands she governs “die” in the winter season of Persephone’s absence. There is nothing she can do. The abduction is not negotiable.

Kelly Lee Phipps points out in a recent article “Ceres and the Urge to Belong” that wherever Ceres lands in your chart is the theme of surrendering to the loss and return. Eris asks us to be with the chaos. Pluto asks us to dive into the fire, enter Hades, and not shy from dark nights of the soul. It is all about transmutation at the highest level.
This implies an assumption of reincarnation, which I can personally resonate with and use extensively in my client readings. However, the idea of reincarnation may also just be a good way of explaining something beyond our actual literal understanding in this very limited third dimensional reality. Metaphor or no, it doesn’t matter. The frame is a valid one, and correlates also to one’s prenatal and early life experience. Karma can be defined as a neutral universal principle that essentially has to do with cause and effect.

Pluto can be looked at as the “evolutionary” intent of the soul as carried in from past incarnations. Pluto is also very tied into genetics, and we know that the information we inherit in our DNA goes far beyond physical characteristics. We inherit our ancestors’ lineages on spiritual, geographical, and psychological levels. We continue the work that is not completely our own. It’s all very mysterious stuff! My father has a Scorpio Moon and my mother has a Pisces Moon trine Pluto. It is not surprising that I would be born with a Hades Moon, and at least two of my four siblings as well. My ex-husband and father of my two daughters does not have any Moon / Pluto connection, and neither do my daughters. My son, however, was born under the canopy of a close stellium with Chiron / Pluto / Moon (Sagittarius in the 7th house) and his father has a Moon / Pluto square.

The strong connection to the past can have the intention of clearing both personal and collective karma. Pluto transmutes and the Moon is not just mothering and emotions, but our lineage and the past. And with Pluto, evil (or the darker side if you wish) is never far away, either operating from within or without.

A stranger example of past lineage connection is my son Damian’s “story”. His father was not interested in being involved (we had split up before I realized I was pregnant) and that was fine with me. The relatively short lived relationship was a lustful nightmare. He changed his mind when his mother’s guru and self-proclaimed identifier of incarnating masters, saw Damian as Chogyam Trungpa. The Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche is an important teacher in the Buddhist Kagyu lineage who barely escaped the Chinese invasion of Tibet, fleeing first to India at the age of 20, then moving to Scotland, England, and finally to the United States, landing in Boulder where I live. He established several meditation centers and Naropa University. He is well known for his book “Crazy Wisdom” among others. Trungpa died in April of 1987.

I did not take this seriously because it smacked too strongly of “specialness” (a most potent trap) which had me running in the opposite direction. His father, on the other hand, took the bait and started running in our direction. That’s another story. The guru whose mission it was to identify these souls, traveled from Texas to visit me when I was pregnant. I did not like her, but gratefully took the check for $800 which she gave me. I also chuckled to myself, because by that time I had intuited that Damian had Down Syndrome and wondered what would happen with that revelation (I had chosen not to have any tests). She told me that I could expect a visit from Pema Chödrön, a well known Buddhist teacher and Trungpa disciple…I’m still waiting.

During Damian’s first year I couldn’t go anywhere without someone stopping me to tell me I had a “special” child, and they weren’t just talking about his DS. Mind you, he also has Neptune / South Node / Uranus on his Midheaven. Most of these people were middle-aged “wise-women” working in the healing arts and looking like modern day witches. One day while I was shopping at one of our 7 (soon to be 8) natural food stores, a slick, well dressed stranger with an arrogant air, come up and asked if I would like a “reading”. Why not? As it turns out, he was Rennie Davis of the infamous Chicago Seven (originally eight) which also included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, and others, charged with conspiracy in the 60’s related to the Vietnam War protests. Now it seems he is a venture capitalist and lecturer on meditation and self awareness. He said that he was there to inform me that Damian had a special destiny and that I was chosen as his mother because of the completely unconditional space which I held for him. At least my life isn’t boring.

The early intensity with this issue has died down, but Damian is quite well known in Boulder.

Judy Hall writes, “…the natal Moon is the significator of Mother and of mothering patterns that have been handed down through generation.” A Hades Moon is when Pluto is aspecting the Moon, a Scorpio Moon, or a Moon in the 8th house. Although the positive of a Hades Moon includes the empowering and cathartic mother, often the archetype is darker, more destructive, the dominating family matriarch who can devour one’s sense of self. The Moon is our emotional body, our past, our nurturance. Pluto can take us to hell and back in the death and rebirth cycle that transforms us as nothing else can. Pluto, Scorpio and the 8th house also have to do with abandonment, rejection and betrayal, and that darker side hits our emotions on a very deep and sometimes traumatic level.

I have a Moon / Pluto conjunction in the 7th house. After readingNeith’s latest review of Judy Hall’s The Hades Moon, I was inspired to buy my fourth copy (the other three I gave away) and am going to write some about my Hades Moon experience of….my mother.

I could write a book! She is a Leonian, larger than life personality, proud of her looks and I was proud of her too as she negotiated foreign lands with style, looking to me like Jackie Kennedy with a fashion style a step ahead of her conservative peers. Because my Dad’s work took him traveling around the world half the time and very busy when he was at home, she was indeed the matriarch. We were always well dressed and the model of social ettiquette. She devoted her life to her home and children, a picture perfect family, but with secrets, some dark, behind closed doors – another Hades Moon trait.

While my Dad was working back in the Middle East, my Mom took us to the US to visit relatives. This is us on a typical day in Lansing, Michigan.

I admired her intellect. She once told me she tested out with an IQ of 132, she played the piano, and introduced me at young ages to great thinkers who influence me still such as Teillard de Chardin and C.S. Lewis. I loved her and wanted nothing more than to feel secure in the glow of her approval.

Unfortunately, she never did approve of me and my Virgo Moon experience of her criticism of me on practically every level was intense. The Pluto aspect was my experience of the control and the subtle and manipulative (so sweet and charming and yet so dangerous) way my personality was devoured. I ended up marrying primarily to escape on a psychological level (a typical Hades Moon strategy) only to realize I had in many ways married my mother. I became the alter ego of my husband until Pluto began its square to my natal Pluto and some veils started to lift – and my ex left. I am still discovering deep pockets of low self worth as I struggle to discover who I am.

I don’t blame my mother and I know her experience would not mirror mine, and I know she did her best. But there is a Hades Moon karmic lineage I was born into and I figured that when my mother evoked nothing but love and compassion from me, then I would be truly enlightened….she was this lifetime’s barometer!

My parents were missionaries, both devout and religious although they divorced when I was 25, and my mother became progressively more prejudiced, conservative and heavy handed with her judgments of my hardships being a direct result of not “trusting in the Lord”. Her lack of empathy became more obvious and more shocking, and even my daughters who always gave her a break found her visits very difficult. I felt something had to be done, so a few years ago I designed what I hoped would be a transformative (Pluto) healing exercise.

I thought of 73 positive or inspiring traits she had – one for each year of her life – and wrote each on a tiny slip of paper, which I rolled into a scroll, tied a ribbon around and hung on a little tree. I gave it to her for her birthday. This was a hard thing for me to do, partly because I was feeling particularly abandoned and criticized by her during one of the hardest times of my life with my baby’s special needs and an ugly court case with his father.

I think she appreciated it, but her moral and religious proselytizing got worse and the catharsis on my end was not what I had hoped. My journey to enlightenment was going to be long, but I do feel much more neutral towards her and solid in myself. However, as I have put up stronger boundaries we have become more and more estranged. That may be the karmic story for now in that Hades Moon kind of way.

Yesterday on a Pluto conjunct Moon day, Elsa asks, “Do you have a preference how you die?” and one response was the preference to die after the kids are grown so that they don’t have the experience of losing a parent in childhood.

Almost from the moment of my first child’s birth was the overwhelming fear of dying before she could reach a level of maturity that would enable her to survive physically, emotionally and spiritually on her own. In my mind, this was at 21 years, which I later understood through the writings of Joseph Chilton Pearce to be when our “angel” or prefrontal lobes, which govern higher thinking and spiritual abilities such as compassion, are fully developed.

And so I made my Plutonian pact with God – anything but dying before my children are grown. I did not include in the pact “anything but my children dying before they are grown”, although that was also never far from my mind.

The Moon symbolizes, mothering, the mother, the womb, and the past. She is the mirror, which in the case of this conjunction, reflects Pluto, symbolizing death, rebirth, and initiation. Judy Hall writes, For everyone, no matter what aspects their Moon may have, the birth experience is a brush with death. As Stanislov Grof puts it, “We actually all taste death somehow in the process of being born.” …We are moving from the interconnectedness of the lunar unconscious into the separateness of the Sun, dying through Pluto so that we may be born again. In Grof’s opinion, this automatically leads to spiritual openings in the psyche.

A Hades Moon is often associated with difficult births, and although neither of my daughters inherited this Moon, their births for me were difficult. With my first, I intuited that I would need blood and so had some of my own drawn in preparation. Sure enough, two weeks past the due date and after 48 hours of labour, I was told that if I didn’t start pushing to get her out a C-section would be necessary as her oxygen was dropping from the cord wrapped around her neck. I determinedly gave a Herculean push, which coincided with my body’s first natural push, and out she flew….with a lot of blood and me in dire need of a blood transfusion. Luckily I had my own!

My second daughter’s birth was less eventful although pertussin was given when nothing was happening two weeks past the due date, and I dilated from 0 to 10 in 2 hours. The pain was searing, and in the moment I didn’t know how I would survive it. Notice the theme of the “devouring mother” from the perspective of both girls being “trapped” in the womb for two weeks and needing help in pushing through that block.

I was obsessed with the idea of me dying while they were still children. Then one beautiful Boulder day, shortly after my divorce and when they were still very young, I was hiking up a trail which I did at least three times a week with my dog to escape the “urban” stress and to get some time alone. At the top of the mountain was a tourist who seemed needy for conversation. That was the last thing I wanted, so I waited at least 20 minutes for him to get far enough down the trail and continued on my way, only to find he had stopped to wait for me further down (under the auspices of tying his boot laces). Some would think this was creepy, but he seemed to be a very harmless and open 40-something person with silvery hair, and eyes that twinkled with warmth. I only thought that there must be a good reason for him to need to talk, and so after some inner grumbling, I relaxed into hiking the rest of the way down with him. He was visiting from the East Coast with some Shamanic Training program.

Several months later on a snowy February day I was coming down the same mountain when I slipped and twisted my ankle. There was no one in sight and I hobbled down at least a mile and then had someone at the bottom take me to the emergency room. Sure enough, my ankle was not just broken but also severely mangled from walking down on it and I was in a cast for weeks. Well, coincidently this guy shows up again as I’m hobbling around town, back for part two of his training. He assured me he had nothing to do with my broken ankle, which I thought was a very weird comment, but he did do a lot of healing work on my ankle as well as energetically working with some debts I had and which then magically cleared up. He would come up to my mountain home and help with dishes and play with the kids. There was nothing romantic – just a soul connection that seemed easy and purposeful.

One day I confided to him that I regularly had violent and disturbing dreams, often lucid dreams which felt like I was in the middle of a war zone helping people out. It felt like the Middle East. He then told me that our connection was that of partners as Italian resistance fighters during WWII and that I had to make a “Sophie’s Choice” of sorts, getting on a train of death to save my two children.

Whether this is literally true or not doesn’t matter, but it is an interesting metaphoric look into the psyche of my Hades Moon mind, which was so obsessed with this worry that a powerful external situation was created to reflect it back, and thus allow for an initiatory rebirth of sorts. I pushed through and released the fears I had, into a newer more trusting relationship with life.

Until I conceived my son Damian. Judy Hall will ask people with a Hades Moon if they almost died at birth, and his close Pluto/Moon/Chiron conjunction reflects both the struggle for both our lives during pregnancy and a level of abandonment and near death with his birth when I hemorrhaged and passed out and he almost died. That is another longer story, but the energy of both our Hades Moons was and continues to be overwhelmingly intense at times. I had to make a new Plutonian pact with God – anything but my death before his – because at this point I can’t see how he would survive without me (Down Syndrome). That means I am going to need to live a long life. I also regularly flash visions of a small coffin which I know is his, and that jolts me into a space of unconditional acceptance for whatever happens, with faith and trust that all is in the highest good of all concerned. So, do I have a preference to how I die? With the peace of knowing my children are safe.

It’s Time to Take Action – by Melody Scott Zindell

November 4th, 2009 by Melody Scott Zindell No comments »

Melody Scott Zindell writes at her blog http://blog.depth-astrology.com

On October 16, 2009 Mars moved into Leo for 33 weeks, instead of the normal 7 weeks per sign. This is because Mars turns retrograde every 2 years 2 months, and it is during this time that mars is physically closest to the earth. Mars will be at its brightest during this cycle on January 29th, 2010.

Consider that generally speaking Mars in Leo is about taking charge of one’s own destiny, control of one’s own life. If we have Mars in Leo in our natal chart, we are driven towards creative self-actualization as Kings and Queens of our own lives, passionate, inspiring, dignified and creative.

Integrating the polarity archetype of Aquarius includes serving the collective with our creativity, remembering that we are all connected and if we join our creative forces together, we can as a group move to the next level of the spiral with relative ease and grace. As we step through the portal of the Grand Cardinal Cross that we feel now and that continues through 2010, we may well be entering the beginning of a new cycle that will be nothing like what we have come from. I’m assuming this is a good thing since what we have now doesn’t seem to be working. We are stuck in some fairly difficult karmic ruts, and this energetic and serious pattern will be an initiation indeed. However, those who are attached to the status quo or too heavily dependant on the system will have the hardest times because the systems will be breaking down. Those who have begun to or are willing with Mars in Leo to begin to take control of their lives on a very individual and independent level will come out the other end strong even if the next few years have difficult times for us all.

It’s time to take action. How do you know if what you are doing is your destiny or not? Begin by looking at your general happiness level. What motivates you to do the work you are doing and does it inspire your passion? Is your sense of individual creativity fed and do you have a sense of control over what and where your life is going? Does what you do contribute strongly to your ideas about what life should be and what you value? Spending time each day going within to the still point in our heart can connect us to the intelligence and knowing that flows between us and the universe.

The location of Mars in our natal chart, including sign, house and aspects to other points, gives us clues as to the cutting edge desires and passions of our souls, and the archetypes should be interwoven in some manner into our life and destiny as we travel the vortex that spirals ever onward and ever changing. Mars in Leo will also be stimulating the sign of Leo in our natal chart and this energy if left ignored or untended to can project outward through anger or accidents. On the other hand, understanding what area of our lives must move forward is valuable and shows us where we might encounter blocks that keep us from growing and moving forward, and the dynamics of our lives can successfully be changed.

The Moon and Poetry – by Drew Biggin

November 3rd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Drew Biggin writes at http://nononsenseastrology.com

Ah, the Moon – imaginative, a natural communicator, and prone to sudden changes in mood. It’s no surprise then, that Gauquelin found that poets were likely to be born when the Moon was in a Plus Zone . The most powerful Plus Zones are the Twelfth  House and around the Midheaven and Ninth House.

Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Rimbaud

Take a look at the charts of the French poets Rimbaud and Verlaine. Note how they both have the Moon in a Plus Zone. Rimbaud also had Venus in the Twelfth, making him value himself, and his feelings, that bit more.

rimbaudver

No, not all poets are born with the Moon in a powerful zone, and, no, not all people born with the Moon prominent will be poets. The Moon is linked with feelings though, and people express those in different ways.

Maybe those poets without the Moon in a Plus Zone find it easier to get a hold of their thoughts, as their feelings don’t get in the way. Maybe their poetry gains a certain degree of objectivity as a consequence.

A little more about the Moon and poets today. Take a look at Ted’s chart.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Hughes

tedhughes

According to the man himself, Ted was born at solar midnight – the Sun had reached its lowest point. As you can see, it is conjunct the IC (the cusp of the Third/Fourth House).

If this time is correct, Ted was in fact born with the poetic Moon in one of the most powerful zones in the chart – the Twelfth House. Assertive Mars was also in there though, which may have caused some problems: the Moon is passive, imaginative, and happy to go with the flow, while Mars is assertive, energetic, and has no time for sitting around daydreaming. A tough combination.

Still, it could be said that Ted was simply a driven (Mars) dreamer (Moon). If, of course, he was right about his birth time, and he was born at solar midnight.

He may have just been using poetic licence.

Horoscope of Neptune Direct Station Nov 4, 2009 – by Jude Cowell

November 3rd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Jude Cowell writes at http://www.starsoverwashington.com/

On Nov 4, 2009, Neptune Rx changes direction following its Rx Station near the end of May, 2009 @ 26AQ28. Here you see the horoscope of the precise degree/minute/second that the gaseous giant turns *Direct @ 23AQ41; Hour of Mercury 12Sco06 conjunct Sun 12Sco28…’13Sco’ = “An Inventor Inventing.”

Sun and Mercury are at apex of a Fixed T-Square (highlighted inblue on the chart)…

Mars/ASC = Sun: quarrels; having to adjust things forcefully; operating in an inhospitable milieu; intense teamwork; excitability.

Mars/ASC = Mercury: disputes; a sharp tongue; angry letters; telling someone off; a desire for discussion; intolerance.

Wealthy string-puller and sometime-assassin and spy Pluto is nestled within midpoints pictures himself, indicating big proposals, persuasions, and extreme good fortune of the kind he takes for granted.

As you see, the revolutionary, force-wielding, reforming, and impatient Uranus/Pluto midpoint is rising…

Uran/Pluto = ASC: force active in one’s environment, orapplication of force; placed in an unusual or restless environment. (Tyl; Ebertin.)

Does this describe Afghanistan?

Well, as you know, whenever a planet changes direction its energy is emphasized and strengthened as it ’slows down’ in preparation for its reversal – seeming to ’stop’ on the degree and minute, so we may notice that in the first week of November 2009 Neptunian qualities in the collective such as spirituality, compassion, and inspiration are spotlighted (Feed America food banks, etc?) – yet insidiously, a stronger Neptune may simultaneously fuel confusions, delusions, and mysteries in global and national arenas.

Unanswered questions and puzzles may not be answered or solved just yet as much as they are uncovered with Neptune’s veils being lifted to reveal…more mysteries! And with critical degrees on the Money axis 2/8 cusps – and Neptune’s co-rulership of Pisces (2nd house of Earning Ability), loss of employment continues with governmental numbers being fudged for best political effect.

Is this the ‘inventor inventing’? (Sun = ‘the leader’ in a national chart so we’ll want to attend to what the president says about financial matters during Neptune’s Station (see below for date its exactitude ends.)

One may wonder if this change of direction for the ‘unwashed masses’/'mass media’ planet associated with oil, gas, and other liquids will at some point reveal or at least partially answer questions about 2008’s election (and/or Inauguration 2009) since this Station Direct occurs on Nov 4, one day after the one-year anniversary of the election/selection of Barack Obama. At his victory announcement on TV (NYC), rising was Mr. Obama’s natal Sun which you see setting here.

In the 2009 Inaugural chart, Neptune was @ 23AQ05 as noted on the outside of the chart (click image to enlarge) and was - is, since an Inaugural chart remains in effect for the duration of the president’s term it describes – involved in a midpoint picture -Uranus/MC = Neptune: creativity; expecting recognition, withdrawal if frustrated; powerlessness; a paralyzed will; suppressed anger.

And interestingly, Neptune on Nov 4 is focal planet in a midpoint picture which has been ongoing for a couple of weeks or so: the ‘political reformist group’ midpoint of Uranus/North Node…

Uran/NN = Neptune: one who is easily influenced or impressed; being suddenly deceived by others; undermining of an association; retirement of a partner from a joint enterprise; meeting with people off the beaten path.

If you soon hear of such a sudden ‘retirement’ you gleaned it from underneath secretive Neptune’s veil!

The only out-of-bounds body, the Moon, indicates insecurity; the Hour of Mercury may bring announcements, agreements, messages and other mercurial things such as trade or commerce, though the ‘inventor inventing’ can indicate deceptions as well as creativity – possibly scientific inventions may be announced – or sold.

Osiris, associated with ancient cults and mysteries conjs Sun/Mercury; President Obama’s natal Sun is conj this DESC 12Leo51; SIGMA conjs BHO’s Sun natally indicating writing, but especially denoting upright moral standards; SIGMA is at MC in the Nov 4 Neptune Station Direct chart and is notated here in my usual scribbly fashion.

Hard times for the US continue and perhaps worsen for a while as the transiting loss-infused, depressive Saturn/Neptune midpoint 12Sag10 conjs US natal ASC in the ‘Sibly’ chart…you see it marked in 10th house…

Sat/Nep = n ASC: oppressive family circumstances; limitation of freedom; emotional depression; emotional suffering caused by others; sense of being ‘out of the group’; a loner.

This has a financial ring but also relates to the loss and hardships of serving in war; plus, Saturn/Neptune has its ‘invisible’ or ’secret government’ flavor as well so secret renditions and surveillance are hiding yet may be part of what a forward moving Neptune uncovers along with more financial fraud. Neptune 23AQ 41 is inconjunct US natal Neptune 22Vir25 showing that adjustmentsmust be or are being made. Inconjuncts (aka, quincunxes, 150 degr) are linked with health problems as well, so health care debates and legislations continue to baffle (Neptune) us.

Here we see tr Midas Rx 8Gem29 with the Moon 7Gem48 in 4th house of the Foundation of the Matter; tr Pan is nearby, so the Moon – the people – are hemmed in by trickster Pan, associated with Capricorn’s government-business-law provinces, and gold-hoarding Midas. Basically the trio is in ‘nuclear degrees’ too, and wherever the Moon is posited indicates fluctuations – here in 4th house of Domestic Scene.

So with goat-like Pan on one side and world-banking Midas on the other, there is a ‘victimization’ flavor here: the Moon rises with Menkar, a star with keywords: a victim of the unconscious, which Bernadette Brady described to me as: someone being mowed down in a senseless act of violence (and she said this pre-9/11.)

(You may wish to look at President Obama’s just-past Geminian Lunar Return but I won’t cover it here. Moon in Gemini is also a writer’s significator along with Sigma conj his natal Sun in dramatic Leo, so often describing a lawyer or actor.)

Asteroid Icarus 00Sag10, associated with risk-taking and withassassinations, is at MC and opposes asteroid Terpsichore (the orchestrator) 2Gem12 Rx at IC. The riot-inciting, explosive, gun-toting Mars/Uranus midpoint 00Gem54 also opposes Icarus, and no, I don’t like the looks of the situation.

Plus, if you want a difficult, grief-inspiring Fixed Star you can’t do much better than Alcyone 00Gem00 (keywords: something to cry about), one of the Seven Weeping Sisters indicating exile, suffering, and misfortune. ‘Insight’ is the only positive expression for Alcyone I know of, but perhaps you know of others.

Also at MC is Yed Prior 2Sag18: success in 9th house matters; shrewd, conniving, sarcastic. (Horary Astrology Plain and Simple, Anthony Louis.)

And of course, the unconscious karmic condition of this MC’s 1Sag40 is “1Sag” = “A Grand Army of the Republic Campfire” which corals to the fore the wars we’re mired in as lumbering Neptune changes direction.

~:~

*Neptune actually reaches 23AQ41 on Nov 2 @ 6:03:09 pm in DC according to my SolarFire software, and remains @ 23:41 until Nov 6, 2009 @ 8:30:10 am est in DC with a T-Square pattern formed at that time…

Moon/Pluto = Saturn 00Lib50: grave inhibitions; pressure to regroup forces and plan anew; tr Saturn = US natal MC (’Sibly’ chart) which gives: Moon/Pluto = MC: acting alone and never in accord with others; one-sidedness.

My opinion? The hawkish, neocon, zionist elements of America’s Neptunian, unrealistic, and quixotic notions of global domination with its natural resource plunderings – and blunderings – are ruining and destroying our nation.

As Golda Meir said so well: “A leader who does not hesitate before he sends his nation into battle is not fit to be a leader.”

Et tu, Bush, Cheney. Et tu, Barack Obama (who has grace enough to pause.)

Et tu, all of you manning drones of death from a furtive location in Houston, Texas.

Here’s a quote for your superiors who order you in your tasks:

“Power takes as ingratitude the writhings of its victims.” – Rabindranath Tagore.

And one more quote that describes Stars Over Washington’s American author:

“I dissent because I care.” – Jude Cowell 11.1.09 6:45 pm est

Synastry Studies: Oppositions, Hand in Hand – by Dawn Bodrogi

November 3rd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Dawn Bodrogi writes at her blog “The Inner Wheel”

This is the first in an occasional series on the way aspects operate in synastry.

I don’t think there is any more distrusted aspect than the opposition. New students often look at oppositions in charts and shudder, or just sigh and give up. They assume those planets can’t possibly be compatible, they have nothing in common. It’s assumed that the two planets are completely at war with one another, and will never connect. Synastry brings out the worst of assumptions about oppositions, that an opposition formed between two charts dooms those planets in some way, forcing the couple into a lifetime of power struggles, arguments, and misunderstandings.

Part of the problem is the way oppositions have been portrayed in many ‘cookbook’ astrology texts. I’ve seen even the most innocent of oppositions, Venus/Venus or Moon/Venus, given a text that would put off a goth. It’s time to reclaim the opposition.

In mathematical terms, the opposition is the second most powerful aspect, after the conjunction (Surprised you, didn’t I? Bet you thought it was the square.). The ‘two’ comes after the ‘one.’ Dividing the circle by two gives us 180 degrees. The opposition relates to whatever alien ‘out there’ must be integrated. The energies of the two planets involved must be acknowledged, processed, and learn to act as one. No matter how strange the interaction must seem, it has to happen. There has to be some give and take.

Within a chart, there will be a natural give and take between the planets. The trick to understanding these planets is in knowing that they are ‘natural’ partners. Usually, they are in complimentary signs and the one facilitates the understanding of the other via their function in the signs, even though the road may be rocky. They are often like characters in a bad romantic comedy; though they ‘fight’ with one another, you know will get together in the end, given enough time and circumstance. They may never totally agree, though they will have fun (and aggravation) trying. With out of sign oppositions, the plot gets thicker, and the road to one-ness is rougher, but happen it must.

Oppositions work via a see-sawing effect. If it’s not weighted towards one end, the opposition can vacillate, one day embracing one end, the next, the other. This give and take can happen when oppositions are formed between charts, and they can often drive us crazy. If we have a Mars/Pluto opposition between us, one day my Mars might be the victor, the next, your Pluto will win control. Planets in opposition arm wrestle in a pronounced way. Power is turned over quickly, without warning, leaving the participants confused.

Troubles occur when one planet has the upper hand over another, whether this happens natally or in synastry. If it’s my Sun, Moon, Ascendant ruler, or dispositor of the Sun, a ruler of an angle, or if the opposition is weighted by an outer planet, the conflict may seem more intense, because the ‘weightier’ planet will win out. That planet will have its own way, the house involved will have a stronger imprint, and the lesser planet will either have to fight for recognition or come to some compromise. This is difficult when it’s a planet like Venus, which has much to do with our sense of self-worth. When Venus is involved in an opposition, it’s values are challenged. If there is a Venus opposition, we find ourselves being tested regarding our sense of what we own, internally or externally. Venus/Pluto will do this by engaging us in power struggles; Venus/Uranus, by tearing away what we possess, Venus/Neptune, by idealizing what we (may or may not) have and then having it disappear, without explanation or recompense. No matter what opposes it, Venus has to both hold on to its values and allow growth according to the outer planet. Squares to any opposition will aggravate the tension. If a planet is trine/sexile an opposition, it will act as a diplomat, syphoning off the see-sawing energy and allowing both planets easier expression through its position.

The key to the opposition lies in the fact that each planet is on the other planet’s polarity point. The polarity point of a planet is a vulnerable place which indicates what most needs developing in that planet. Oppositions, in fact, are a blessing, because they tell us exactly what those planets need in order to be stronger, to be whole. If Venus is opposite my Pluto, both Venus and Pluto need adjustment. Venus’s values, tastes, and preferences will be challenged by Pluto’s compulsion towards the ultimate truth. Pluto’s obsessive search for the ultimate will be guided by Venus’s love, its values and its aesthetic urges. If successful, both ends of the opposition will alter. Polarity points show us what is missing in the planet’s expression. If my Cancer Venus is opposite a Capricorn Mars, the self-sufficiency that Cancer Venus needs to learn (via the opposite sign) will be helped by practical Mars in Capricorn actions. Venus will be able to ‘learn’ its Capricorn lessons via Mars activity. If Jupiter is there, rather than Mars, the Cancer Venus will need to experience an opening towards achievement, and to getting itself ‘out there.’ It will need to learn how to go about life in a practical and yet adventurous way.

WallStreetWeather.net Forecast For Week Of November 1, 2009: “Bankers Full Moon Apocalypse Edition” – by Deborah

November 2nd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Deborah writes at wallstreetweather.net

Monday’s Full Moon in Venus-ruled Taurus (2:14 PM EST) illuminates the banking system and the amount of loan losses on and off bank’s balance sheets. Mars in speculative Leo challenging the Taurus Moon and the Sun and Mercury conjoined in Scorpio indicates that the market will swiftly react to the latest information uncovered about the banks. These energies are especially strong in the USA as the Taurus Full Moon chart is in its “home” sector of the chart representing the financial system.

The Sun in Scorpio is at home in the chart sector representing shared resources, debt, taxes, and bankruptcy. Commercial lender CIT filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this afternoon, with Carl Icahn providing debtor in possession financing. Icahn’s loan moves ahead of the $2.33 billion CIT received from the government after the Federal Reserve gave emergency approval for CIT to become a bank holding company in order to qualify for TARP. In its December 22, 2008 emergency approval, the Fed described CIT as “well capitalized under applicable federal guidelines.”

This Full Moon has the potential to begin financial apocalypse, as the pronounced energies of Neptune rule the Full Moon chart in the USA,* lifting the veil to reveal the financial system is not as solid as it appears.

McClatchy owned newspapers reported today that for five months during 2006-7 Goldman Sachs (GS) was selling $40+ billion of “triple-A” rated MBS to pension funds and institutional investors at the same time it was secretly betting against these securities by purchasing CDS to hedge against a housing downturn.

Neptune rules fraud. The combination of Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto with Mars in Leo has stepped up taking action to clamp down on insider trading on Wall St. We’re quickly finding out that year after year of gains only means some have an edge on acquiring and acting on insider information rather than being the smartest guys in the room.

Neptune rules oil. Neptune stationary periods tend to correlate to large moves in crude oil, and oil has tended to drop on demand concerns during Neptune’s station. Inflation, asset bubbles and credit issues tend to be a concern in one form or another when Neptune’s energy is pronounced.

Neptune has been going back and forth over the NYSE’s natal Pluto in Aquarius since March 2008 when the government arranged for Bear Stearns to be dissolved into JPMorgan Chase (JPM). During Neptune’s second pass, crude oil hit a record high in July 2008 and banking analyst Richard Bove asked, “Who Is Next?” Neptune rules communism, and by the third pass to the NYSE Pluto in early 2009, even the most ardent free marketers were sounding like communists by calling for bank nationalization.

Neptune will turn direct conjoining the NYSE Pluto for the final time on Wednesday. One hour and five minutes later, the FOMC Announcement will be released. I think there will be two changes in the statement and at least one of these will catch the market off guard at this juncture. The Fed will describe how it has been working behind the scenes so it is ready to act to remove excess liquidity from the system. The second change will rework the sentence about economic conditions warranting low rates; the “extended period” will likely be removed.

The combination of all the planetary influences I have described will continue to create large market moves and volatile conditions. Although the overall trend this week is negative, it could still be interspersed with brief upward moves as the market would prefer to operate in denial under a veil of illusion even though the strong influence of Saturn and Pluto is bringing out Neptune’s other tendency for panic that spreads like a contagion.

Profection and Solar Return – by Sandy L. Crowther

November 2nd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Sandy L. Crowther writes at http://www.jupitersweb.com

For those unfamiliar with Profections, the directed Profection (annual) rate is equivalent to a direction arc of 30 degrees per year, except Profections move everything at a rate of 30 degrees – or one sign - each year, or 2.5 degrees per month. As stated in the index of Solar Fire: “Profection Annual“ an annual rate of 30 degrees, corresponding to a direction of one sign (or house) per year.” So start with the Ascending degree representing age 0. One sign ahead moves the ascendant a full 30 degrees and marks the first birthday. Another 30 degrees and you’ve got the second birthday. The twelfth birthday, and also the 24th, 36th, 48th, etc., is always back to the Ascendant again. This method was apparently very common in ancient times and was also used by medieval astrologers also until it fell out of favor after the Renaissance.

Profection: This is an ancient system of moving the planets and points in the chart, one house per year of life as explained above, and is a technique taken from the Hellenistic Era. Within this system of analysis using Profections to determine and time the area of focus for the year, the chart may be further moved by subdividing the house into smaller units of time. So basically, Profections represent the unfolding of a specific area of life – coming into focus at a certain time of life. It is a “Time Lord” Methodology, based on annual rotation of the Natal Chart, to determine one’s yearly focus.

This Methodology description below is preliminary and basic, and something I am currently working on researching…Results to date have been very encouraging, and well worth my time investment. The way I am working with Profections is based on the integration and synthesis referencing the Natal Chart, Transit Chart, Profection Chart, and Solar Return Charts, using Sidereal rather than Tropical Zodiac positions. The Software programs I am primarily working with for ease of calculations are Solar Fire Deluxe, Astracadabra, and KPAstro. (Refinements and additions will be made at a later date, and chart examples will follows as time permits. I will share with you my findings as I move further along in my research, as I find Profections to be quite a valuable aid for those interested in Predictive Astrology…so please bear with me as I put together some of the basics…)

Preliminary Guidelines for Analysis

A. Natal Chart: This is the promise.

B. Profection Chart: The spotlight – or focus of activity being highlighted. The House activated.

C. Solar Return Chart: How we handle the activated house that the Profection Chart has highlighted. Our will or volition for managing these affairs of the Profection.

D. Transit Chart: The planetary dances that run interference with these experiences, supporting or challenging the energies at play.

Preliminary notes should be readily available in advance on the running Dashas taking place at the time of the Profection and Solar Return assessments, along with the dasha lords natal significations, star and sub lords (both natally and in transit), relationships of star lords to their sub lords, along with noting their cuspal lordships. Aspects of dasha lords to Profection and Solar Return lagna lords and key players, along with noting the new angles of both Profection and Solar Return Charts – and planets placed within – should be given due credence. Part of FortuneChiron, and outer planets should not be underestimated in synthesis. (My personal preference for delineation is Sidereal: KP and Placidus House, along with True Nodes). Karakas are always relevant, and it goes without saying we should follow closely the transits of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Nodes.

1. Construct the Profection Chart. (If you are unfamiliar with Profections or need assistance with constructing this chart, please visit Donna’s website at: http://www.sageasita.com/KPStellar/kPVisuals.htm and scroll down to Visual #11.

2. Note the House that the Profection Ascendant falls in. This is the area the “spotlight” shines brightly on, and the focus House of activity. If there are two houses involved due to interception, follow through further to research when (the Profection date) that focus will narrow down to one specific house by falling on the cusp, and keep track of activity involving both houses throughout that time frame. Do any planets join the Ascendant?

3. Note the position of the Profection lagna lord…consider this as a sort of Year Lord for the time in question. Note this Profection lagna lord’s position in the Solar Return Chart, along with the Natal chart. What are the areas of influence?

4. Note the influences of the aspects, the new Angular focus of the chart, the Part of Fortune, Chiron, planets in profected lagna and joining profected lagna lord, and profected planetary placements. Note placement of the personal planets (Sun and Moon) relative to new Profected lagna.

5. Now do the same with the Solar Return – following up on where the Solar Return Ascendant falls, its lord, where this lord is profecting (through what house in Profection chart) and repeat all of the above steps.

6. If the Profection chart in closing in on the next birthday (or is closer to the next birthday), consider evaluating both the current Solar Return and the following Solar Return to get a better feel of where the energy is heading. Often times – 3 to 6 months prior to the next Solar Return – the client will feel the effects of the upcoming Solar Return rather than the previous Return. My preference is to calculate using the NEAREST Solar Return Chart. Work with the charts and get a feel for your individual preference.

7. Relocate the Solar Return Chart to the exact place the client is positioned at the time the Solar Return takes place. Check SR aspects to one another, and note the houses that the planets fall in. Pay special attention to the placement of the Sun in the relocated SR Chart from both the relocated SR ascendant and the Profected ascendant, and note the SR aspects to and from the Sun. Also note if SR Sun falls in an angular sign relative to the SR Ascendant, etc.

8. See if the SR planets are well integrated in the SR chart, or if one particular planet seems to be irresponsive with respect to integrating – in some manner – with other planets. (An unaspected Solar Return Planet may not support the way in which matters are being handled with respect to the focus (Profection Chart), so determine if there is a particular planet floundering aimlessly around in the SR chart – with not much direction. If so, often times that planet in the SR will display the negative characteristics of his energy, and even disrupt progress. However, also note this planet’s effects natally (and in transit) prior to determining the effects that are likely to manifest, as counter-indications may either lighten or intensify effects, and the Natal holds the promise.

9. Have a ready reckoner on the status of chart Marakas and the Badhaka for Natal and Solar Return charts if there are concerns, and/or your attention is drawn to matters of health and physical well being.

10. Note in the SR Chart if there is a predominance of planets in a certain element to get a better handle on how one is likely to handle the affairs of the Profection. For example, if the SR has an abundance of planets placed in Water signs, the response may be emotionally based, whereas if the predominance of planets lies in the air signs, the affairs of the Profection may be more rationally based. Do the same with respect to the effects of Moveable, Fixed, and Dual energies (Western being Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable) to determine the years energy when assessing initiative and drive in handling the focus the Profection spotlights and brings forth.

11. Say that the Profection Chart lagna falls in the 10th in Capricorn. You would then closely watch the activity through the 10th and Capricorn along with Saturn’s transits, and the aspects to and from 10th lord Saturn. Saturn being “time lord” of activity becomes highly significant and dominant.

12. Note what planets within a house go to an Angle in the Profection and Solar Return Charts (“angle” meaning from the Profection and Solar Return Ascendant). Planets involved in angular planetary positions often trigger events – which revolve around the nature of the planet posited in the angle.

The additional information given below is based on my ongoing research with respect to integrating the personal points – Sun, Moon, and Lagna – for further detail in delineation in the Profection Chart. This is for your consideration in addition to – and with consideration to the above.

The Profection Sun appears to relate to experiences and opportunities given to us in this particular time frame on our journey through life, and is relative to what areas of interest we will personally be involved with – on a physical level – during this time frame. The placement of the Sun in the Profection Chart shows what areas – ripe for us to experience – have opened up. And as relative to our opportunities, follow through to note the Sun’s dispositor,  where the Sun’s dispositor is located relative to using natal and Profection lagna, and note what that placement can infer with respect to unveiling timely circumstances and experiences. I am also currently researching the Profected Sun as  lagna for the time frame – with some telling results…You can test using the Sun as lagna if so inclined – using the same parameters – and follow through with the same criteria as stated in my former sentence, and note (in as many charts as possible) what information is revealed, and its relevance.

The  Profection Moon shows our emotional and mental response to our experiences for the time frame we are referencing, and reveals how we are mentally and emotionally reacting to – and internally experiencing – what is happening in our personal environment. Again follow through with disposition and placement of the Moon’s dispositor and see what information this additionally reveals to us.  The Moon can be very telling, and shows how we emotionally and intellectually respond to the current experiences we are given – or how we internally feel about what is currently happening in our lives. Again, my research is elementary at this point but again is encouraging – so also investigate the Profection Moon as lagna and note planetary placements.

The Profection Lagna – the time lord of activity – shows our actions and activity during this particular time frame, and what influences we deliberately bring to the table based on our individual environment, and based on the opportunities  and experiences given to us  by the Sun. Look at the lagna to see the period’s responses to the opportunities we are presented with, and follow through with the suggestions (above) as relative for the Sun and Moon. For all 3 personal lagna’s, do not overlook noting the placement of the dasha and bhukti lords, and see how they may present themselves favorably – or through challenge – to the “opportunities, emotional and mental responses, and activities” as represented by the Profected Sun, Moon, and Lagna respectively. And lastly – don’t forget to diligently watch the transits – which often times target with direct aim – revealing the sequence of events as they unfold…

The technique of Profections seems to me to be quite a valuable – but lost or forgotten technique – previously used quite successfully for prediction in another era. The information I have experimented with and given in the above paragraphs has been to me both significant and relevant – however there is a depth necessary to evaluating this grade and type of info – and therefore likely requires an extensive application of mind on the Astrologer’s part – coupled with an ability to synthesize and integrate multiple factors simultaneously  – and perhaps not necessarily meant for the beginning Student of Astrology. Skills of integration and synthesis while considering multiple factors – along with having an experienced Astrological background on both theory and technique – will assist one in making proper assessments. As always – the skill of the Astrologer is detrimental for predictive success…and none of us is infallible…So although the Profection process and technique is pretty straightforward and simple enough to draw up – intense application of mind is where the challenge lies. My feeling is that the challenge should be looked upon with both excitement and curiosity -  but the challenge should never be underestimated…Look long and hard at all factors…

After noting what sign and house the Profected Lagna, Sun and Moon are posited in, take it a bit further now, and check the condition, dignity, placement, etc, of their dispositor’s in the Solar Return Chart. The Part of Fortune assessment can additionally be included in all of the above criteria…but be sure to differentiate between day and night births when calculating the Part of Fortune. According to researchers of the ancient astrological texts, the correct method of calculating the Part of Fortune is to use Ascendant + Moon – Sun for daytime births, and Ascendant + Sun – Moon for nighttime births. Also, it will pay to be attentive to all Profected planets that may be crossing Natal angles, and note their significance.

Profection and Solar Return Sidereal Analysis

by Sandy L. Crowther

October 31, 2007

The event of an attempted sexual assault occurred on August 13, 2007 at 2:30 PM. This young girl was running:

DBAS:  Su/Ju/Ve/Ju

Her Profection Ascendant (focus) falls in the 7th house of secret enemies and hidden dangers, and is posited at 19 Aries 39′ in the star of Venus and sub of Rahu. Both AD lord Venus and Rahu are primary significators for the 8th house of sexual and criminal activity, as is profection lagna lord, Mars, who falls in the natal 8th. The 8th house is a house representative of both crime and sex, or sexual crimes. Rahu proxies for Sun, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter.

Mahadasha lord, Sun, is also a primary significator for the 8th house, while bhukti lord, Jupiter conjoining Sun and posited in the natal 8th, is primary significator for the 2nd house of family and close relatives, and secondary significator for the 8th house. As previously mentioned, star lord of profection lagna is Venus, who is primary significator for the 8th, and secondary significator for the 7th. The 2nd house is 7th from the 8th and 8th from the 7th. The 7th house represents secret enemies, hidden dangers, along with those individuals with whom a child interacts.

Being lord of profection Lagna, Mars hold the position of “Year Lord” in her chart, and highlights where the activity of the yearly focus is likely to occur. Mars falls, in basic isolation, in the Solar Return 11th house of “friends”, is primary significator for the 8th, and is posited in the Solar Return star of Ketu and sub of bhukti lord, Jupiter. Profection Ascendant lord, Mars, falls in the natal 8th conjoining Pluto. Ketu proxies for both Mahadasha and bhukti lords – Sun and Jupiter respectively - both of whom are significators for the 8th house of sexuality and criminal activity.

As mentioned above, Profection Year Lord, Mars, is a planet of concern, stands out by isolating himself in the Solar Return 11th house of “friends”, and is aspecting Pluto – another primary significator for the 8th. Mars being the “time lord” of activity due to its lordship of profection ascendant, sets the stage for a situation involving aggressive behavior and sexual misconduct (Ma/Pl), or aggressive activities, upheaval, and abuse of a sexual nature. Both Mars and Pluto are sexual planets. Pluto is power, Mars is aggression, and both are primary significators for the 8th house.

Year Lord Mars in transit forms an angular T-Square with the Nodes, and an angular Grand Cross involving Mars, the Part of Fortune, and the Nodes. Mars conjoins Pluto in the Profection Chart in the natal 8th – triggering or setting off events relative to Mars, Pluto, and the 8th house.

Personal planet, Mahadasha lord Sun (along with lord bhukti Jupiter) is posited in the 8th house from the profected lagna, while profected lagna lord and profected 8th lord, (both of which happen to be Mars), tightly square profected Moon – the other personal planet. Moon is also primary significator for the 7th house of secret enemies, associates, and danger, and is transiting through the star of Ketu and sub of Rahu.

The Solar Return ascendant falls in the natal 8th in the star of Mars and sub of Venus; both first rate significators for the 8th house of sexual crimes. The sub lord of the natal 8th house is bhukti lord, Jupiter, who is posited in the star of Mars – 8th house significator – and Jupiter is timely triggered for activating the combined affairs brought to our attention by the profection chart.

Primary significators for the 4th house of home and mother, are Saturn and Uranus respectively, with Moon being natural karaka for mother. Transit Moon conjoins Saturn and opposes natal Uranus, who conjoins transit Neptune. The mother of this six year old child was babysitting for the 12 year old boy in her home. The two children were playing in the back yard when all of a sudden, the young girl’s mother felt an intuitive and sick impulse in the pit of her stomach that something was very wrong, and felt the sudden urge to go outside and check on the children. She went outside and called for the children in the back yard, and at first there was no response. She called again. After a few moments they both came out out from behind the garage in the back yard – her daughter frightened, disheveled, and covered with dirt. Seeing the boy’s physical appearance, she knew immediately and instinctively that her fears were justified. The situation she feared and suspected was then confirmed by her daughter, as she ran quickly to her mother’s arms. She then immediately questioned the boy as to what was going on. He admitted his guilt – which was obvious and difficult (impossible) to physically hide. It was her (mom’s) sudden (Uranus) intuitive (Neptune) impulse that saved her daughter from becoming the subject of an impending sexual assault perpetuated by this 12 year old boy. In the Solar Return Chart, the Part of Fortune is disposed of by natal 4th lord, Saturn, significator for her mother.

The police were called, and the young girl was immediately taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. Upon meeting with the detective at the police department, it was discovered by this young girl’s parents that this 12 year old boy had two sexual misconduct allegations (felony crimes) already pending against him – both involving young children. The young girl is now in counseling.

Astrology of Mental Health – by Sandy L. Crowther

November 2nd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Sandy L. Crowther writes at http://www.jupitersweb.com

First, familiarize yourself with the planets, houses, and signs that address anxiety, depression, and overall mental health states in a natal chart, affecting long term and short term mental states, and the differences between brief versus prolonged episodic instability. The short-term problems
are exposed by the malefic transit influences over significant weak natal planets. Long term mental and emotional instability issues are shown by weakness of and/or affliction to significant natal planets, as listed below.

By understanding through case studies, what areas of the natal chart are weak with respect to mental health both in the natal chart and in transit, we can then see more clearly the complex but contributing long term or short term factors leading to the destabilization of mental health. By determining the activations and timing factors through observing the transits, main periods, and bhuktis in effect, that may trigger an alert to upcoming tensions, we can prepare our clients, our friends, and/or ourselves, for possible trying times with respect to mental and/or emotional instability or difficulty. By studying the Panchamsa (D-V), we can further assess planetary strengths and weaknesses.

Significators of Psychiatric Problems:

1. Significant Planets: Significator of the mind is the Moon. Mercury rules nerves and communication capabilities controlled by the brain.
2. Significant Houses: The fourth and the fifth.
3. Significant Signs:Cancer and Leo. Natal afflictions to the significator planets, houses, and signs can cause the psychiatric difficulties and emotional problems to be active for long durations, where transit afflictions can relate to short-term disturbances.
4. Divisional Chart for Depression: Divisional fifth – Panchamsa.

Emotional Health Significators:

Depression: the fifth house
Emotional Peace: the fifth and Moon
Mental Peace: the fourth and Moon
Nervous Control: the sixth and Mercury
General Karaka (significator) for the fifth: Jupiter
General Karaka (significator) for the fourth: Moon and Venus

Points to Remember:

Mercury, ruling the analytical abilities, when badly placed or under the severe affliction of the most malefic planet equal bhava madhya (midpoint), causes unmanageable anxiety leading to depression, nervous breakdowns, hypertension, and insomnia. Happiness, health, and general disposition are ruled by the first house, and are additionally factored in.

The third house and Mercury rule mental growth, the third house and Mars rule initiatives, the fourth house rules the power of basic comprehension,
and the fifth house rules intelligence, emotional peace of mind, and depression. (Although beyond the scope of this discussion, severe natal
weakness and/or affliction of the planets connected with the third, the fourth, and the fifth houses, along with both the Moon and Mercury, and
without any contact of benefic offsetting influences, can result in severe mental handicaps, such as mental retardation.)

The overall natal weakness and/or affliction of the planets connected with the third, the fourth, and the fifth houses, and/or both the Moon and
Mercury, may result in mental deficiencies for the native, inabilities to cope, and consequently bring upon the native anything from anxiety and
depression, to full blown manic episodes, depending upon the severity of affliction and weakness, and the contributing nature of any influential
contacts. Both the sixth house and Mercury rule nervous control, which also factors into consideration when assessing determinants for anxiety.

For Divisional Analysis we study:

1. The strength of the lord of the ascendant for the appropriate divisional,
2. The Moon,
3. The significator, (Jupiter for the divisional fifth)
4. And the lord(s) of the particular significant/relevant houses in the rashi chart.

Note: Diagnosing states of Mental Health can be a lengthy process for Professionals in the medical field, such as Psychiatrists and Psychologists,
as many aspects of the behavior criteria, background, and motivational aspects of the patient must be thoroughly evaluated for appropriate medical
diagnosis. Often times the psychiatric medical diagnosis is followed by lengthy and diversified experimentation in medication, with the physician
searching for the appropriate medicinal prescriptive relief for that particular patient, while minimizing side effects. Often times these prescription intentions are met with unsuccessful results when it comes to finding the magic pill for behavior modification or relief, because mental and emotional states of mind are based on so many internal and external personal experiences, many of which remain a mystery to all but the patient.

Astrologer’s encounters similar experiences and investigations in their search, only we base our evaluation on the horoscope. Every individual
horoscope is a woven pattern of unique energy at play, and this energy must be thoroughly synthesized and integrated before a conclusion can be drawn, especially with respect to something as delicate as states of mental health. The prescriptions we recommend are remedial measures with propitiation of the malefics. Although beyond the scope of this article, I advise all astrologers to become very familiar with remedial measures, as often times they become the saving grace for those clients experiencing depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.

Questions & Answers:

It is really a very good article given on mental health. I would like to know… does lagna/lagna lord play any role in mental health?

Thanks for your kind words.

Yes. Condition of lagna and lagna lord certainly play a role in mental health. Please see under “Points to Remember”, where I stated (albeit briefly) that “Happiness, health, and general disposition are ruled by the first house.” Then in the last paragraph, where I stated “Every individual horoscope is a woven pattern of unique energy at play, and this energy must be thoroughly synthesized and integrated before a conclusion can be drawn, especially with respect to something as delicate as states of mental health.”

To elaborate on the above a bit, the condition of the first house, its strength, occupants, aspects, and it’s lord/karaka are all very important for determining the tone and nature of the personality in general. So to look at the primary significations for a person’s general, physical, and emotional health is certainly mandatory and a big part of the astrological synthesizing process, and synthesizing and integrating the entire chart is key. This is often not an easy task. We ALL have bad days – some people just have bad days more frequently than others, some are pre-disposed to consistent emotional and/or mental turmoil, while other personality types are better equipped for a pre-disposition for taking things in stride.

For example, Cancer’s may experience ups and down more frequently on account of being ruled by the fast moving Moon, karaka for emotions and mental peace. But analysis by planetary piecemeal without synthesis will never give the entire picture, because we need a full evaluation of the entire chart picture, and to get that, we need to include all the influences, and then we are in a position to better determine what influences appear to pre-dominate. That includes a complete comprehension of the planetary weaknesses present in the chart – as well as the afflictions – as both cause difficulty.

I have seen charts with no natal nodal afflictions, no afflictions to houses, and no planetary afflictions – but the client was consistently having a severe impairment to his long-term coping mechanisms because of multiple planetary weakness, resulting in a pre-disposition to excesses. He was medically diagnosed with ADHD. His lagna was Sagittarius, Jupiter was combust, Moon was weak, as was Mercury.

On the other hand, we also need to consider that when a benefic weak planet is well-placed, un-afflicted, and aspects its own MT house or is aspected by benefics, it still retains some capacity for beneficence…the question then becomes how much power does it retain? So a careful weighing and evaluation of all planetary influences, may just result in a weakened planet being the most influential planet in the chart….It happens…

So isn’t Jyotish the most wonderful exercise in mental aerobics we have on the planet?

Astrologer’s Research Data – by Sandy Crowther

Statistical Research Breakdown based on 2136 Charts of Astrologers:

Professionals, Students, and Hobbyists Included.

Preliminaries Used for Evaluating Assessments:

1. Orbs are defined only when specific orbs are set for the calculations.

2. Hard Aspects include all the 30 Degree angles – more specifically: Opposition, Square, Quincunx and Conjunctions. (I have not included any of the many non-equal degree aspects).

3. Parallels (//) and Contra-Parallels (\\) are used as Hard Aspects ONLY when Saturn is involved in the planetary configuration, otherwise they are considered Soft Aspects.

4. Soft Aspects include all 30 Degree Angles – Specifically: Trine, Sextile, Semi-Sextile, Parallel and Contra-Parallel.

5. Keep in mind that the conjunction may not actually reflect the best statistical “breakdown” when it comes to differentiating between “soft and hard” aspects – which I did differentiate against in some cases. This is due to the fact that the actual impact of the conjunction – whether beneficial or challenging – is largely dependent on the conjoined planets involved. So the overall hits (contacts) – whether hard or soft – may actually reflect better parameters for assessments and evaluations.

6. A multitude of Controls have been established below. Many of the controls have been broken down further to fine tune the assessments. As we are all independent thinkers, please feel free to eliminate those Controls that you feel hold no particular value for you.

7. And lastly, some configurations requested for evaluation (such as sub lords, and certain other configurations between two planets – for example – Part of Fortune) could not be included in this phase of the Research due to the fact that the options for exporting/importing charts do not include options for ALL the various Vedic Software Programs that one may have, and therefore I elected to use the route that was most time efficient. Therefore out of my choices for exporting/importing my own charts, the available Vedic database I elected to use to calculate these charts was SJS (Shri Jyoti Star, which has no PF calculation availability). Also, I could have added more charts from my personal database, but thought this number was sufficient for now, as some of the numbers (below) are quite surprising (and enlightening) – as I suspected they would be. At any rate, unless (or until) I find the time to go through these 2136 charts by hand, these calculations will have to suffice for now. For your convenience, I have also calculated the total percentage of hits (last column) on the data I worked with below.

Tough Love When Saturn Moves into Libra (Tropical) – by Jenni Stone

November 2nd, 2009 by Surfer No comments »

Jenni Stone writes at http://astrology-news-jenni-stone.info

Jenni Stone has studied Astrology for more than 25 years and she reads both Western and Vedic Charts. She can be reached at http://astrology-news-jenni-stone.info for professional readings.

Aries – You like to move quickly and take the lead, but with Saturn moving into Libra makes you more aware of the consequence of your actions, especially in regard to how you treat others. Saturn, the great teacher of patience and responsibility, also focuses on how you nurture yourself while taking care of others. This process will likely slow you down, but also bring you the peace and clarity you need to create a lasting union with loved ones. Use the New Moon energy of November 16 to show your devotion to a loved one, but also express your love with practical concepts like refinancing the mortgage, or paying down credit cards so you can better handle debts and obligations going forward.

Taurus – Saturn in Libra is activating your sixth house of everyday work habits and health is asking you to make changes in diet and take on a physical exercise program so that you can have more energy and start feeling better about yourself.  Don’t wait for an urgent situation to arise before you let go of unhealthy habits that undermine your well being. Start your new program with the New Moon energy of October 17-18 and everything will go forward easily. The New Moon of November 16 brings you closer to friends and family as you plan for the holiday season. Your relationship with a pet may change, or you may decide to adopt a cat or dog into your family.

Gemini – Saturn moving into your fifth house of romance, creativity and children is about to bring changes as your responsibility towards the loved ones shift in a meaningful way. Perhaps your “children” grow up and leave the nest, and this could bring a sense of loss, but that could also make your marriage deeper and more meaningful as you create romance in your existing relationship. Creative energy is revived and this can be used to make ideas into concrete reality, or you can dream new dreams – just as a master painter would do while looking at a blank canvas and deciding what to initiate. Use the energy of the New Moon of November 16 to let go of bad habits that no longer serve you.  An exercise program or healthy diet plan can help you let go of the stress that has been building.

Cancer – you already love your home, as Saturn moves into your fourth house, it will be even more important to have a sanctuary that embraces and relaxes you.  Your house, and other real estate holdings, may be ready for an update, and if you are not ready to move, you may want to renovate or add an addition. Honor this change by throwing out clutter and items that are no longer working for you in order to make space for clarity and the joy of seeing the things that you love and make you happy. In the next two years, you are likely to enjoy a more mature relationship with parents and with your ancestral roots. The New Moon of November 16 can spark the creative urge and help you make the holidays more meaningful with home-made goodies and gifts for loved ones.

Leo – Saturn moves slowly and changes signs only every two and a half years, and with this move into Libra, you are likely to change your communication style and plan of action for the future. You may find your siblings and the people in your neighborhood are likely to go through some changes. Saturn gives structure to communications and deepens the mind – however, there can also be melancholy and depressing thoughts, so stay healthy and keep fit – fortunately, Mars in your sign for the next few months can help you with your fitness program. The New Moon energy of November 16 can help you transform your home, either temporarily for the holidays, or with long-term projects. Finances and your attitude towards how money is spent can change during the last week of November.

Virgo – you will likely give a sigh of relief as Saturn leaves your Sun sign at the end of October and moves into Libra.  You have carried a heavy burden of responsibility over the last couple of years, and have likely felt that the world was a serious place, and that you had to be accountable. With Saturn moving into Libra, comes a new set of rules that is making you aware that you have a purpose beyond making money and making a professional statement. Your resources may be somewhat stretched at first as you look at ways to achieve long term life goals as this may require teaching, traveling or going back to college. Honor Saturn by acknowledging how far you’ve come in the past two and a half years and see how you’ve grown through the challenges. The New Moon, November 16, helps you make plans to get in touch with siblings and neighbors so that you can celebrate the festive season with more joy and lighthearted fun than in recent years.

Libra – with Saturn moving into your Sun sign at the end of October, you will feel the power and energy to fully realize your life goals and dreams. However, as we said at the beginning, Saturn is all about tough love and building a good foundation for long-term success, so you may be asked to take on some responsibility before you are handed the keys to the executive suite. This is not the time to expect others to handle the challenges for you, but rather for you to define your dreams in a concrete way, and then forgive yourself for not having achieved them so far. If you need help from a coach, do the research and then make a commitment to carry through on promises to yourself. Use the energy of you New Moon (Oct 18-19) to begin the process and then continue with the New Moon on November 16, as that will help you to better define the resources you need to get to where you want to be.

Scorpio – with Saturn moving into your twelfth house of spirituality (Oct 28), you can intuitively feel the shift of energy. Getting in touch with spirit may require that you spend time alone, and this may change how you look at key elements in your life and while others may not sense these transformative changes, there is an internal shift that will impact your priorities, and ultimately how you react to challenges. Use the energy of the New Moon in your Sun sign, November 16, to begin new projects and put power into making dreams come true. Mars in Leo in your tenth house is making this is your time to launch new business endeavors and establish a successful professional reputation.

Sagittarius – you are already experiencing expansive changes as Mars in Leo opens your mind to the possibility of travel and higher learning and you will further explore your new role with Saturn in your eleventh house. This placement challenges you to get involved in organizations and large groups, both in a professional way and to volunteer your time to help others.  Spending time with work associates and mining the gold in your friendships, will help you to better understand the role that you’ll be playing in the next couple of years. The New Moon of November 16 in your twelfth house re-energizes your connection to spirit and brings a deeper meaning into all your endeavors.

Capricorn – Saturn in Libra is likely to change the way that the world sees you, perhaps making you more social and less work-oriented, or perhaps bringing you opportunities to take a leadership role. If you have ever wanted to change jobs, be more visible in your chosen profession, or create a secondary source of income from teaching or speaking in public about a cause, this is your opportunity. However, with Saturn in your tenth house bringing increased visibility and public recognition, there could also be more scrutiny into your personal life, so be aware of the challenges and make wise choices. The New Moon in Scorpio on November will have you thinking about what education objectives or long distance travel can best help you to reach your goals.

Aquarius – as Jupiter leaves your Sun sign early in 2010, you will have the help of Saturn in your ninth house to help you prepare for the next stage of your life. The opportunities that have come in the past year now require that you work in a sensible way to consolidate gains – which could involve going back for more education or long distance travel to promote your ideas. Mars, with an extended say in your opposite sign of Leo is bringing opportunities from friends and partners who can see what a good job you’ve done of promoting yourself and your ideas. Meanwhile a promotion and acknowledgment of your accomplishments could come to you with the New Moon of November 16.  Enjoy the recognition and appreciation, as it is well deserved and long overdue.

Pisces – For the past couple of years, your commitment to partners may have been somewhat burdensome, and now that Saturn is moving into Libra, the weight is being lifted from your shoulders. However, there may still be some joint financial goals, income and expenditures that need to be resolved.  The New Moon in Scorpio (Nov 16 and 17) lights up your ninth house of travel and this is a great time to plan a trip for the holidays.  Jupiter is poised to move into your Sun sign early in 2010 and this brings a year of opportunities and recognition, though Saturn and Mars may but require some reorganization of your work schedule before the kudos kicks in.
